A character known as the surf instructor collects dead plant matter as a form of self-care in the face of her climate collapse induced anxiety and depression. Gallery visitors are able to interact and listen to some of the surf instructor’s botanical collection. More-than-human sounds can be heard from the thorny palm bark kalimba, red tide bubbler, Pongamia rattle, leaf strum, birch fan, and Abrus shaker.
The entire collection of art works was featured in my solo art exhibit Who Saves Who? at the Allcott Gallery in North Carolina in January 2019.
Below you can hear a sample from the thumb piano created from the amplified bark of a thorny palm tree.
